I spoke with Jack's allergist today. He is negative for allergies to Vanilla, Cocoa, and Strawberries. Unfortunately he does have an allergy to oats. On a scale of 1-6 they said his antibody level was a 3. I'm not sure how useful this number is because when I asked what it means clinically she said that he could have anything from nasal congestion to anaphylactic shock. That's some spectrum! We carry EpiPens now so we're always prepared. In retrospect I remembered a few things that might have been clues. When we tried to give him oat cereal he fussed and refused it. When he had bad eczema over the winter I gave him oatmeal baths and it seemed like it made it worse. At the time I thought maybe it was just being in water but maybe it was the oats?
We're still waiting on a bunch of other labs to come back including the big ones like dairy, wheat, eggs and a few others.
I guess the poor guy won't be getting any more Cheerios. It's weird because he really seemed to like those and I'm pretty sure that has oats. I know that sometimes with allergies the more you're exposed the worse it will get and one day you can have a major response. We'll take him off everything oat. I guess it could be worse though. Imagine if it was vanilla or cocoa? No ice cream or candy!

Hi
I'm not sure if you received the email I sent last year, I have followed Jack's story since before he was born as I was going through a hard pregnancy too. My son was born the 16th of August and he is also a little miracle having given us all a big fright at birth! 11 months on he's doing just great. A good friend of mine has a CDH angel and I'm so sorry to read about the new CDH angels.
Anyway, it's just great to see Jack looking so good! I love catching up with his blog.
Keep well,
Ellie, Jenny (6) and Will 11mnths xx
