Today we made another trip to Johns Hopkins. This trip was to see the allergist. When we saw an allergist in Frederick we were told Jack was allergic to almost everything under the sun - milk, peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, oat, egg white, egg yolks (I think that's it). Today Dr. Wood did a skin test and from that result plus the blood work and our knowledge of things that set off a rash/hives we know Jack definitely has a milk allergy. The good news is that it seems like he is only allergic to milk in its 'pure' form (straight up, ice cream, etc). If it's broken down by cooking or in his Good Start formula he seems to tolerate it quite well. The plan is to keep him on 29 cal/oz Nestle Good Start Supreme until he is 18 months old. He didn't have much of a reaction to peanuts, oats and eggs. Because peanut allergies can be serious and it seems like the skin vs blood results don't match up the plan is to avoid all contact with peanuts. If we have peanut butter we'll even have to wash our mouths before giving Jack a kiss. I don't think it's a big deal to avoid that and hopefully he'll outgrow it. As for oats - since he loved Cheerios and did fine we're allowed to reintroduce oat. We'll also try eggs in stages: ie, french toast, baked goods then if all goes well Jack will graduate to regular eggs.
We also got a lecture on the epi pen we have to carry for the next few years. We feel much more comfortable now that we understand when it's appropriate to use it.
Overall, it was a good trip and again we are reminded how lucky we are to have Hopkins in our backyard.

Hello, I have been following your blog for a while and I just wanted to let you know that one day my babysitter wasn't thinking and gave my son a peanut butter and jelly sandwich around 18 months. (my son has lots of allergies and severe asthma). So long story short, he had breathing issues. When we went to the Asthma clinic for the first time they did a peanut allergy test on his skin and it came back negative. When they did blood work on him, he had a very high number and the doctor said that if he ingests, it could become fatal. So please, if you think there is a chance, just don't feed him that. Also, I fed Carson chocolate ice cream one day and noticed after one bite he started swelling up. I checked the carton and it said that there could be traces of peanuts from the factory. You would just be amazed what you can find traces of peanuts in.
